"THE LADY NELSON" VISITOR CENTREServicing an average of 80,000 visitors annually, the centre provides a personalised information service on Mount Gambier and The Limestone Coast in the South East Region, which includes a Free Guide, Mount Gambier, District and Regional Map.Because Mount Gambier is centrally located between Adelaide and Melbourne, 10 minutes drive from the Victorian Border, a selected range of information is provided for all South Australian and Victorian Regions. A small range of information for the other States is also available. The history of Mount Gambier is an important focus for "The Lady Nelson" and a small range of historical publications is provided for sale. Relax in the Free Admission Theatre and take off on an exhilarating ride "Across The Green Triangle" to see the superb scenery of the rugged coastline, the gently flowing Glenelg River, the mystery of the caves, the freshness of the pine plantations, the intriguing history and prestigious vineyards. This film is running continuously from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm daily. On display at "The Lady Nelson" is the fossilized skull of Simosthenurus occdentalis, an extinct short-faced kangaroo estimated to be between 50,000 and500,000 years old, has been handed over to The City of Mount Gambier for display at the centre. Discovered in a local diving site by members of The Cave Divers Association of Australia, the fossil was carefully excavated and transported one kilometer underwater back to the cave entrance. The skull was made available to the centre through the cooperative efforts of the land owner, and Dr Gavin Prideaux, Research Associate of the South Australian Museum and Naracoorte Caves. Interact with the exhibits and share some of the experiences of the explorers and the local aboriginal people taking you through time to our country as it is today unfolding some of the mysteries of our history and geology.

Walk on the exciting glass floor in the cave walk to see the illuminated fossil rocks strewn with kangaroo and other bones to represent a typical cave floor of the area. |

Venture into the Geology Room to see and hear the neon volcano explode. Approach the neon volcano, to see it suddenly burst into volcanic activity, rumbling and erupting with steam, smoke and lights. Watch the video to see divers explore the depths of the famous Blue Lake. Trace the voyage of HMS Lady Nelson in the year 1800 and board the full size replica of this tiny brig to hear Lt. Grant tell his story of discovery. Learn about life on this early sailing ship, and with the aid of modern technology, see some of its passengers come to life.
